Description
Nothing else in the shop matters right now. The hood is up, the work lights are on, and the view is close enough to see the garage reflected in the valve covers.
The engine is all contrast: a red block, chrome everywhere a hand could polish, and braided steel lines looping between the carburetor and the fuel fittings like silver rope. A wide, chrome-lidded air cleaner with a red pleated filter crowns the top. To the left, polished headers curve down out of sight. To the right, a finned chrome pulley and a black intake tube banded in red lead the eye back toward the garage, where red tool chests, a shop stool, and a glowing neon sign wait in soft focus.
It took Dee eleven winters to finish this engine. She bought the block from a scrapyard the week she got her license, hauled it home in a borrowed truck, and rebuilt it one paycheck at a time. Friends asked what car it was for. She didn’t have one yet. She polished the valve covers the night she quit a job she hated, and she bolted on the air cleaner the morning her daughter was born. Tonight the last fitting is tight. She turns the shop lights up, steps back, and doesn’t start it. Not yet. For one more evening, she just wants to look.
Rendered as highly detailed, realistic digital art, Heart of Horsepower is made for garages, man caves, she sheds, shop offices, and anyone who has ever stood at an open hood longer than the job required.
