Description
Before her transformation, the Archivist restored recordings that powerful people wanted erased. When an experimental storage system began destroying its collection, she redirected the surviving voices into herself. The transfer left her skin translucent, threaded with crystalline channels capable of holding sound.
Her ability, Living Inscription, transfers those recordings into the cellular patterns of growing plants. Through touch, she can read their vibrations and return a stolen voice to its original speaker. She cannot recover words never recorded or repair a recording whose living host has died. Carrying too many voices fractures her crystalline channels and temporarily costs her own speech.
Here, her archive occupies a greenhouse surrendered to winter.
Snow rests along the planting bench. Frost clings to the weathered framework, and bare branches crowd the windows. Among the moss, a handful of white flowers remain upright—small living vessels carrying voices that have survived an attempt to silence them. She leans close, her expression absorbed in the careful work of keeping their roots alive.
Golden light follows the fine fractures from her shoulder to her fingertips. Against the rough cloth of her dress, her transparent arm looks almost impossibly delicate. Her hands surround the stems without closing over them; even the smallest movement matters when a damaged leaf could interrupt someone’s unfinished sentence.
Sunlight enters through the frozen panes and catches her loose hair, the flowers’ pale petals, and the intricate lattice beneath her skin. Beneath the bench, roots hang into the cold. Above them, she maintains this tiny patch of warmth, tending an archive whose records must be watered, sheltered, and allowed to grow.
