The clockmaker built the owl to watch her workshop at night. She gave it brass gears for a heart, copper feathers patched with blue enamel, and two enormous eyes that could spot a dropped screw in the dark. The owl took the job seriously. Perhaps too seriously. It began correcting her work while she slept, tightening springs and polishing gears she had meant to leave rough. One morning she found a mountain carved into the workbench with a sun rising behind it, and a single word scratched underneath: Original. She never sanded it off. Now she leaves one project unfinished every night, just to see what the owl will do with it.
