Deep beneath the mountains, where waterfalls tumble through ancient stone and enormous crystals illuminate the darkness, lies Glitterdeep Bazaar—a sprawling underground marketplace where almost anything can be bought, bartered, borrowed, or stolen back before sunrise.

The market is built into the walls of a vast cavern, its crooked wooden stalls and narrow stone pathways winding between towering formations of amethyst, emerald, sapphire, and golden crystal. Rope-bound supports hold up weathered awnings, while hundreds of ornate lanterns cast warm amber light across damp cobblestones and crowded merchant tables. High overhead, wooden scaffolding clings to the cliffs, suspended cargo cages hang from heavy cranes, and arched stone bridges connect the settlement's many levels.

At a bustling stall in the foreground, a green-skinned goblin merchant with pointed ears, a mischievous grin, and an impressive collection of trinkets presents a glowing violet potion to a hooded customer. Their counter is crowded with colorful glass bottles, curious instruments, and small treasures whose purposes are known only to those willing to pay for the answers. Nearby, luminous blue and purple mushrooms grow among moss-covered rocks, adding their cool radiance to the lantern-lit scene.

But tonight, Glitterdeep has a problem.

Just before the evening trading bells, a cargo lift descending from the upper galleries arrived with its cage empty and its locking chains coated in fine golden dust. The missing shipment was no ordinary collection of gemstones. It contained a single crystal known as the Dawnshard, a rare mineral capable of storing daylight for decades. Without it, the lanterns illuminating Glitterdeep's deepest passages would eventually begin to fail.

Rumors travel quickly through a marketplace where information is often more valuable than gold. Some merchants suspect smugglers operating from the abandoned tunnels beyond the waterfalls. Others whisper that the Dawnshard was never stolen at all—that something living inside the crystal simply awakened and walked away.

The goblin alchemist at the lantern-covered stall has his own theory. He has spent the evening examining strange traces left on the cargo chains, and the violet liquid now glowing between his fingers is his latest experiment. When the potion is exposed to the golden dust, it briefly reveals the direction in which the missing crystal traveled.

His customer leans closer. Across the market, a group of travelers disappears beneath a distant archway. Somewhere above them, another cargo cage creaks through the darkness.

The next clue may be worth a fortune, but in Glitterdeep, discovering the truth is rarely the same as surviving it.
