Description
The clockmaker accepted a peculiar repair: a clock that lost seven minutes whenever its owner played the piano. Every wheel appeared sound. The hands moved freely. Only when the clockmaker hummed the unfinished passage left on the music stand did the mechanism begin releasing its secret—a length of written music, curling outward from among the gears.
Minutes Unspooled gives that imagined discovery an elaborate visual form. A large cream clock face sits slightly right of center, its black Roman numerals surrounding an open mechanical heart. Slender gold hands cross above intricate wheels and spokes, while a dense network of brass-colored gears extends far beyond the dial. Some are broad and substantial; others nearly disappear into the dark recesses between larger mechanisms.
Long ribbons of musical notation sweep through this machinery. They descend from the upper edge, bow around the clock, and fold across the foreground, their pale, weathered surfaces carrying black notes and staff lines. These broad curves introduce a flowing rhythm among the interlocking teeth and rigid framework. Their overlaps create depth, inviting the eye to follow a passage until it vanishes behind another strip.
Vivid blue panels illuminate the spaces around the warm gold and parchment tones. Scraped textures, fine linear markings, and occasional rust-red accents give the surrounding structure a worked, irregular character. The composition feels crowded with activity, yet the dial remains a steady point around which the music turns.
In the clockmaker’s story, the missing minutes had been collecting inside the unfinished tune. By morning, the score reached across the workshop floor. The clockmaker sent both home together, with a request to hear how the piece ended.
