Description
On the old survey, this stretch of country was left unfinished. The ridge was drawn, the distances entered, and then a black spill swallowed the lower corner. Years later, someone unfolded the sheet and found that the accident looked remarkably like the place: thorn stems branching from dark pools, cactus roots disappearing into blots, stone breaking into scattered flecks.
That imagined map becomes the country of Spatterthorn. A massive, flat-topped mesa anchors the distance, its shelves cut into heavy charcoal grays. In front, tall saguaros lift crooked arms above scattered rocks and wiry scrub. Fine needles sharpen their silhouettes, while broad washes loosen the surrounding terrain. Black droplets streak across the pale sky as though the desert has escaped the careful lines meant to contain it.
Near the left cactus, red flowers complicate the surveyor’s otherwise serviceable mistake. Nothing on the sheet accounts for their color. Perhaps they were added by the person who returned to finish the map—and, finding them there, decided the rest could wait.
