Description
Standing alone between an endless sky and a glasslike sea, Between Heaven and Sea captures a rare moment when light, water, and architecture seem to become one. An aged stone lighthouse rises from the horizon beneath towering clouds illuminated in brilliant shades of gold, orange, rose, and violet.
Below, still water creates an almost perfect reflection, extending the lighthouse and fiery sky into a second world beneath the surface. The glowing lantern provides a quiet focal point amid the immense scale of the surrounding landscape—a small but steadfast light against the grandeur of nature.
Dramatic yet peaceful, Between Heaven and Sea explores contrasts of solitude and strength, stillness and movement, darkness and illumination. It is a portrait of a sentinel standing exactly where two worlds appear to meet.
On calm evenings, when the water lies flat as glass, the lighthouse grows a twin beneath it. The children of the salt village say the upside-down keeper is the real one, and the lamp above is only a reflection. Teodor, who keeps the upright lamp, plays along. Every sunset he climbs the stairs, lights the wick, and waves out the window at nothing in particular. The children swear the upside-down keeper waves back. Last summer, one of them waded out at dusk to check, holding her breath at the edge of the reflection. She came back soaked to the knees and very quiet. All she would say was that Teodor needed to wave faster.
