Description
The ticket seller had promised that the carnival would return next summer. Years later, walking through the meadow where its tents once stood, a visitor opened an old pocket watch and heard the faintest rattle of a ride beginning. Inside, the Ferris wheel was already turning. There was still one empty carriage.
Carnival Pocket Watch holds an entire fairground within an ornate gold-toned case resting in an open hand. At its center, a delicate Ferris wheel rises among exposed gears, its suspended gondolas outlined by tiny golden lights. The resemblance between the ride and the surrounding mechanism makes the miniature world feel ingeniously assembled, with each toothed wheel seemingly capable of setting another attraction in motion.
Orange-and-cream striped canopies shelter small carousel scenes on either side. White horses stand on round platforms near the front, surrounded by lanterns, little structures, and pockets of greenery. Jewel-colored centers punctuate the brass-like machinery, while small cloud forms soften the mechanical backdrop. A string of lights continues across the open lid, extending the festivities into every available corner.
The hand establishes the astonishing scale. Fine skin details and gently curled fingers make the watch feel close enough to examine, inviting a search for the smallest fittings beneath the rides. Beyond it, a meadow dissolves into warm evening light. Fireflies hover among softly blurred grasses, echoing the bulbs inside the case.
In the imagined reunion, the visitor holds the watch steady until the empty carriage reaches the bottom. A tiny gate swings open. From somewhere beneath the striped canopy comes the familiar call for one last ride.
